Island-wide DUI roadblock and patrols by Traffic Enforcement Unit and patrol officers this past week resulted in the arrest of twenty-five drivers who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol (nine in Hilo, six in Kona, two in South Kohala, five in Puna, two in Hamakua, and one in Ka’u).

There were numerous other multiple arrests stemming from the twenty-five DUI arrests. Five for driving left of center line, four for speeding, two for driving while license suspended, three for no operatorâs license, one for promoting detrimental drugs, four for not having a valid no fault insurance card, and one for improper lane usage. There were twenty-two other arrests for traffic and criminal violations. There were five drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol who were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year there have been 992 DUI arrests compared to 849 DUI arrests for the same period last year.

During this past week there were 44 major traffic accidents recorded on our highways. So far this year there were 1,773 major accidents as compared to 1,861 major accidents during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an island-wide basis.
