During the week of November 26-December 2, 2001, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.
So far this year, there have been 736 DUI arrests, a 28 percent decrease from the 1,027 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 2,074 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,006 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 35 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26 percent. Twelve of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 13 at the same time last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
