During the week of December 10-17, 2001, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 768 DUI arrests, a 27 percent decrease from the 1,047 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 2,182 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,088 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There have been 29 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 37 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent. Twelve of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 14 at the same time last year, a decrease of 14 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
