During the week of May 2-May 8, 2006, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 391 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 326 during the same period last year, an increase of 20 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 896 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 855 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There has been a total of 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 15 for the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
