During the week of August 22-August 28, 2006, Big Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 805 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 662 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,686 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,567 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.
There have been a total of 25 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 23 for the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
