During the week of August 16-22, 1999, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 784 DUI arrests, a 19 percent increase over the 660 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 41 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,359, compared to 1,447 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
There have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent.
Four of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 67 percent. One of the alcohol-related fatalities this year was also drug-related.
