Eight more police officers are on the street now that the 66th Police Recruit Class has completed on-the-job training under the supervision of field training officers.

The eight officers began six-and-a-half months of academic training on July 18, 2005, and then did one-on-one field training for an additional three months. They began working as fully-trained officers on May 1, 2006.

Another 17 recruits in the 67th Police Recruit Class will complete academic training on June 15 and will be assigned to the streets on Sept. 16.

The newest class, the 68th Police Recruit Class, started May 1 with 11 officers. They will be ready for their first solo assignments on Feb. 16, 2007.

The department still has 34 sworn positions vacant.
