An explosion damaged the U.S. Social Security Administration office in Hilo around midnight Friday (January 7, 2000), but caused no injuries.

At 12:05 a.m. Friday, South Hilo patrol officers responded to an anonymous report that an explosive device had detonated at the office, located at 1178 Kinoole Street, causing an unspecified amount of damage.

So far, investigators have found no suspects or discovered a motive for the blast. No further details of the case were available.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing the investigation with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone with information about the explosion or who may have caused it is asked to call Hilo CIS Detective Steven Guillermo at 961-2377 or Hilo police at 935-3311.
