A female pedestrian died Monday (April 16, 2001) after she was struck by a vehicle on the Pahoa-Pohoiki Road (Route 132) just south of the Route 130 Intersection near Pahoa High School in Puna.

The victim was identified as Felicia Hanohano, 48, of Pahoa.

Responding to a 5:15 a.m. call, police determined that the victim was in the southbound traffic lane when she was struck by a 1998 Toyota pickup truck driven by Emilio Agpaoa, 35, of a Keaau address.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she later died of injuries suffered in the accident. She was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m.

Neither the driver of the truck nor his passenger, identified as Juan Agpaoa, 67, was injured.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the accident and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Monday’s death was the eighth traffic-related fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine at the same time last year.
