MEDIA RELEASE

A pilot and his four passengers were rescued from waters off Pauuilo after the charter twin-engine plane went down into the ocean Friday morning (May 18, 2001).

Fire rescue personnel quickly got the pilot and his passengers, two men and two women, out of the water and took them to the North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Further details on the condition of the rescued were not immediately available, although hospital authorities said two of those aboard the plane were going to be held overnight for observation.

Police responding to an 8:25 a.m. call from the Federal Aviation Administration learned that a twin-engine Sky master was forced into the ocean off the Paauilo Mill.

The plane, belonging to the Mokulele Flight Service, had taken off from Kona at 7 a.m. and had planned to do a two-hour tour of the Big Island.

The names of the pilot and his passengers were not immediately available, but the passengers were described as being from out of state, two from California and two from Brazil.
