MEDIA RELEASE

East Hawaii detectives have charged 23-year old Kole Race-Joaquin today (November 3, 2005), with a variety of charges stemming from his escape from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center and his activities while on the run. Police charged Race-Joaquin with second-degree escape, first-degree robbery, kidnapping, resisting arrest, second degree assaulting a police officer, third degree promoting a dangerous drug, third degree promoting a detrimental drug and two counts of prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia. Additionally, he was charged under the strength of two contempt warrants.

The robbery and kidnapping charges stem from an incident, which took place in the early morning hours of October 22, 2005, in the lower Waiakea Uka area of Hilo. A 26-year old Hilo man reported to police that two men in a truck rammed into his vehicle, beat him, took his 34‑year old female companion against her will and stole his vehicle. The female, who was familiar with her assailant, was located the following day in good health. Both victims suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack and did not require any medical attention.

In addition to the reasons for which Race-Joaquin was originally being detained at the correctional facility, his bail for the subsequent charges has been set at $300,000. He is currently being held at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
