CRIME STOPPERS RELEASE

Police are asking for the public’s help in apprehending an assailant in an unprovoked attack on a North Kohala man on December 18, 1999.

The victim, Harold Higa, 54, was struck on the head with a hard blunt object by an unknown male wearing a ski mask, hood and dark clothing as the victim was getting out of his truck in the driveway of his residence in Hawi.

Higa and his wife, Corinne Higa, 50, owners of Shige Service Station in Hawi, had just returned home about 8:30 p.m. when the attack took place. The suspect came out from the dark, approached the victim from behind and began hitting him.

After the attack, the suspect fled on foot.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Detective Theodore Gaspar of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4204.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property.
