MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A Hilo man injured in an apparent traffic altercation more than a week ago died Monday (July 5, 1999) at the Hilo Medical Center.

The victim, George Iaukea Sr., 52, was pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing an investigation into the case pending an autopsy tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

Iaukea was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday, June 27, 1999, after he was allegedly struck in an altercation over traffic.

Police and fire rescue personnel had responded to a call that the victim of an assault was lying on the ground and not breathing at Carlsmith Park in Keaukaha. Responding fire rescue personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the victim and transported him to the hospital.

Witnesses said the victim’s vehicle was blocking traffic near the restroom area of the park when the suspect got angry, and he and the victim got out of their vehicles. They said the suspect slapped the victim on top of head, then struck him in the face, knocking him on the ground, and left the scene.

The suspect, Larry Chung, 21, of Hilo, was arrested and later released pending further investigation by CIS detectives.
