Media Release

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department were notified that a 4-month-old infant expired Wednesday (November 5) at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu.

The infant was identified as Jazmyne Ikeda of Captain Cook.

Honolulu police detectives have classified the case as an unattended death.

The baby’s mother reported that she checked on the baby shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday (November 4) while the baby was sleeping. At 4 p.m., she checked again and found the infant unresponsive with her head wedged between the mattress and a dresser. The mother immediately took the baby outside to the father and they drove to the nearest fire station.

Fire Department personnel took the baby to Kona Community Hospital, where she was resuscitated. She was flown to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The baby was pronounced dead at 11:01 a.m.

Hawaii Police Department detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section are coordinating efforts with the Honolulu Police Department to continue the investigation and determine the exact cause of death. The Honolulu Police Department has scheduled an autopsy.
