MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A six-week-old female infant was reported still in critical condition Tuesday (June 22, 2004) at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu with broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a punctured lung.

Hospital authorities said the infant’s condition had improved somewhat. She was reported breathing on her own and no longer requiring blood transfusions.

The infant was flown to the Oahu after being admitted Saturday to the Kona Community Hospital emergency room having difficulty breathing. On further examination, it was determined that the infant was suffering from multiple injuries.

Responding to a 10:30 p.m. call from the Kona hospital, police took the infant into protective custody.

They arrested girl’s parents — Michael Stupplebeen, 28, and Nenamarie Gruezo, 22 — at the hospital and subsequently released them pending further investigation.

West Hawaii Juvenile Aid Section detectives have classified the case as endangering the welfare of a minor.
