MEDIA RELEASE

East Hawaii Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged a male juvenile Wednesday (May 12, 2004) with attempted first-degree robbery for an incident that occurred last month.

The youth, charged at 11:40 a.m., was scheduled to be flown to Oahu, for detention at a juvenile facility.

The juvenile is accused of approaching a male tourist and his family about 1:30 p.m. on April 18, 2004, at the Kehena Beach parking lot area in Puna. The suspect allegedly demanded all of the victim’s money, and when the victim refused the demands, the suspect punched him in the head. The suspect then allegedly told the victim, “You can do this the easy way or the hard way,” lifted his shirt and brandished a pistol.

The victim, his wife and two children managed to flee in their rental car and report the incident at the Pahoa substation in Puna.

Puna Patrol officers located the juvenile and arrested him, but had to release him because the family was leaving the island. East Hawaii JAS detectives later located the family on the U.S. mainland, where family members identified the juvenile from a photo lineup.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about it is asked to call JAS Detective Randal Ishii at 961-2278 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
