Media Release (update)

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department have arrested a man and a woman in connection with an attempted murder investigation in Ka’u.

Yvette Monique Maez, 28, of Kealakekua was arrested Monday (October 27). Anthony Hartz, 34, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was arrested Tuesday (October 28). Both are being held at the Kona police cellblock without charges on suspicion of attempted murder while Area II detectives continue the investigation.

Ka’u patrol officers responded to a call about an injured man requiring assistance shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday (October 26).

Investigation determined that Maez lured the victim, 33-year-old Isaac Couchie of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, out of his house. As Couchie was riding his motorcycle down his driveway, Hartz intentionally drove a gold sports-utility vehicle into him, causing a compound fracture to Couchie’s right leg. Hartz then got out of the SUV and struck Couchie about the head with a football-size rock, causing additional injuries.

Hartz and Maez fled the scene in the SUV.

Neighbors called 911 when they heard cries for help.

Couchie was taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains confined in stable condition.

Police recovered the SUV in the area shortly after 7 a.m. Monday.
