MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives have started an investigation into a variety of offenses, including filing a false report, stemming from a shooting incident that occurred Wednesday evening (November 7, 2001) in Ka’u.

The victim, identified as Ruby Javar, 61, originally told police he had been shot by an unknown assailant while checking his farm, located above Pahala.

Police said Javar had filed a false report and that he had accidentally shot himself in the left leg while loading a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun.

Javar was taken by a friend to the Ka’u Hospital for treatment of his wound, then transferred to the Hilo Medical Center and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He remains confined at Queen’s in stable condition.

Detectives are investigating several offenses, including filing a false report, having an illegal place to keep a firearm, failure to register the firearm and owning an illegal sawed-off shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches in length.

The results of the investigations will be referred to the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Offense for Grand Jury action.

The victim originally told police he and a friend were checking his farm when he was shot by an unknown assailant. He told police he had been having problems with unknown persons damaging property and stealing vegetables.

Based on the victim’s story, police had originally initiated an assault and reckless endangering investigation.
