Police have identified a 24-year-old Waimea man who died Friday morning in a single-car accident in Kona.

The victim was identified as Thyres K. Simao of Waimea.

Police responding to a 4:45 a.m. call determined that a 1995 Jeep Wrangler traveling south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway ran off the right side of the road and overturned .9 miles north of the 88-mile marker.

The driver and sole occupant, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Kona Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:38 a.m.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is the 14th traffic fatality this year compared with the same number at this time last year.
