MEDIA RELEASE

A motorcyclist died Saturday (April 10, 2004) of injuries he suffered the day before in a one-vehicle crash on Kalanianaole Street in the Keaukaha area of Hilo.

The victim was identified as Charles Aiona Jr., 52, of a Keaukaha address.

Responding to a 3:36 p.m. call Friday, police determined that Aiona was riding a 1994 Honda Shadow motorcycle south on Kalanianaole Street when his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a traffic sign.

After the crash, the victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died on Saturday.

Police have not determined if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Saturday’s death was the 17th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven at the same time last year.
