Motorists Reminded to Stop for School Buses 03-15-01

HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
TRAFFIC SERVICES SECTION
LIEUTENANT ROBERT K. KAAUA
PHONE: 326-4222
MARCH 15, 2001

MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding motorists that passing a school bus on Big Island roadways while the red lights on the bus are flashing is a traffic violation.

The law applies not only to vehicles in the same lane of travel behind the bus, but to traffic in any adjacent lane regardless of the direction of traffic in that lane.

Police issued the notice because of an increase of reports from motorists and school bus drivers of this kind of hazardous driving.

The police cautioned that overtaking a school bus places Big Island children in serious risk of injury or even death. They noted that motorists caught violating the school bus passing law are subject to a fine of up to $500.
