MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives reclassified a case as a murder investigation after a 51-year-old male victim died Thursday (October 18, 2001) of a gunshot wound.

The victim, Gaylon Baldado, was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. after undergoing surgery for his wound at the Hilo Medical Center.

The victim’s ex-wife, Genesis Eleakala Kauhi, 50, of a Baker Street residence, is being held in the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation.

Responding to a 5:14 a.m. call of a shooting incident at a Keaukaha residence, police found the victim with a gunshot wound to his left abdomen area. Rescue personnel treated the victim and took him to the hospital.

Police learned that after being shot, the victim had gone to a neighbor’s house, told the occupants he was shot and asked them to call an ambulance.

After the victim died, detectives reclassified the case from an attempted murder to a murder investigation.
