MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

An autopsy conducted on Joseph A. Jensen, a 77-year-old Ka’u man who was a passenger in a motor vehicle that collided with a cement truck on January 16, 2006 at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) and Kona Kai Boulevard in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates area died of a heart attack and not from injuries sustained from the traffic collision.

Traffic investigators have reclassified this case from a negligent homicide to a coroner’s inquest.

Responding to a 9:00 a.m. (January 16, 2006) call, Ka’u patrol officers determined that a 2004 Kenworth cement truck was traveling south making a left turn from Route 11 onto Kona Kai Boulevard when a 2001 Nissan four-door sedan also traveling south attempted to pass the cement truck in a no passing zone and side-swiped the truck. The vehicle then ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

The traffic fatality count for the Big Island was reduced to 6, compared to six at the same time last year.
