MEDIA RELEASE

An overturned tanker truck closed one lane of traffic on Queen Kaahumanu Highway for almost two hours Tuesday morning (June 13, 2006).

The tanker from the E.M. Rivera construction company was turning right from Hinalani Street onto the highway when it tipped onto its side, blocking the merge lane and the northbound lane. Although the tank was carrying only water, oil and diesel fuel from the truck itself spilled onto part of the southbound lane.

The driver, a 49-year-old Kona man, was transported to Kona Community Hospital with minor injuries. No one else was injured.

Traffic in both directions alternated using the southbound lane until the highway was cleared and the northbound lane was reopened at 10:15 a.m.
