A 66-year-old Kona woman died Monday (December 3, 2001) at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu of injuries she suffered when she was struck by a police car the day before in Kona.

The victim, identified as Gabina Makil, of Captain Cook, was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. She had flown to Queen’s on Sunday and confined with head injuries she suffered in the accident.

Responding to a 6:21 p.m.call Sunday, police determined that Makil was crossing Mamalahoa Highway in a marked crosswalk in front of the Central Kona Union Church in Kealakekua when she was hit by a southbound marked police vehicle driven by patrol officer Calvin Sasaki, who was on duty at the time.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment and later flown to Honolulu.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation into the accident.

Monday’s death was the 27th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 35 at the same time last year.
