Hilo Vice and Community Policing officers arrested eight persons for various drug offenses after executing a search warrant on a Hilo “ice house” Friday morning (September 7, 2001).

At 8:43 a.m., the officers arrested seven adult males and one adult female on seven counts each of promoting dangerous drugs and four counts each of possessing illegal drug paraphernalia. Two of the suspects had previous outstanding bench warrants issued for them.

When the officers arrived, the two male suspects who had outstanding warrants on them fled the residence. The first, identified as Dwayne Silva, 42, of Hilo, was caught and arrested in the immediate vicinity. The second, identified as James Asuncion, 26, of the Ainaloa subdivision in Puna, illegally entered two homes and eventually was found hiding in the closet of the second home. He was arrested for an additional two counts of criminal trespass and one count of criminal property damage.

The other suspects arrested were identified as Donovan “Manu” Hanohano, 44, of Hilo; Cedric Pulgados, 37, of Hilo; Duke Malakaua, 28, of Hilo; George Camarillo, 49, of Hilo; James Kaauwai, 37, of Hilo; and Vincelyn Mehau, 42, of Papaikou.

Officers recovered more than one ounce of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice”; one ounce of dried marijuana; and illegal drug paraphernalia, including packets, scales and pipes.

They also recovered a 22-caliber rifle and $1,160 in cash for forfeiture.

The eight suspects were being held Friday afternoon pending further investigation.
