MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are cautioning motorists to use extra caution when traveling on Highway 130 in Puna.

Since the opening of a special Volcano viewing area on Friday (August 17, 2001), there has been an increase in traffic along the route, which runs from Keaau toward the ocean.

An early traffic count shows the number vehicles traveling along the route has increased by about 400 a day.

“We urge motorists to be aware of the increased traffic and to exercise greater caution when traveling the highway,” said Major David A. Kawauchi, head of Field Operations for East Hawaii.
