MEDIA RELEASE

In a crackdown on underage drinking over the past seven weeks, Hilo police officers arrested 65 persons including 52 juveniles, for liquor violations.

A special task force comprised of officers from the Juvenile Aid, Criminal Investigation, Vice and Traffic Services Sections and the Hilo Patrol Division started the crackdown in March.

Although the task force made arrests throughout the South Hilo District, it concentrated on public areas in the Banyan Drive area.

The sweep was part of an ongoing operation conducted to curtail drinking both in public places and by persons under the age of 21.

Police are reminding residents that drinking in public places is illegal and that persons under the age of 21 may not purchase or possess alcoholic beverages in any public place.
