MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding motorists that it is illegal for youth twelve years of age or under to be seated in the bed of a pickup truck, for any person to stand in the bed of a pickup truck, or to sit in the bed of a pickup truck unless there is no seating available in the cab of the vehicle in operation on a public roadway.

Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section noted that Police have received increased reports of persons illegally riding in the bed of pickup trucks and that it is common for this type of activity to increase during the summer months.

“It is very dangerous for persons to sit in the bed of pickup trucks,” Apele said. “A sudden stop or collision will eject anyone sitting in the bed and may cause serious injury or even death.”

Police will be stepping up enforcement in this area in order to reduce injuries and save lives.

Violators are subject to a fine of $72.00.
