Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives are investigating the death of a 47-year-old man who died Monday (July 9, 2001) after a fight in Waimea, South Kohala.
Harold Estes, 47, died at 6:33 p.m. at the North Community Hospital after a mutual affray with a 48-year-old male.
Responding to an 8 p.m. call on Sunday, police learned that Estes was involved in a domestic dispute when the other man intervened. The two men got into a fistfight in which both men punched each other until they became physically exhausted.
While police were investigating the incident, Estes began to have trouble breathing, and fire rescue personnel were called.
Estes was taken to the North Community Hospital, where he slipped into a coma and died the following evening.
An autopsy was conductedTuesday to determine the exact cause of death. The autopsy results are pending lab tests and tissue examination.
Meanwhile, Kona CIS detectives are continuing the investigation and have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest.
