MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are cautioning motorists of parking in an accessible parking space reserved for disabled persons, including parking in the access aisle of an accessible parking space.

An accessible parking space compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act consists of a parking stall with a minimum width of 96 inches and an access aisle at least 60 inches wide. These spaces are marked by signs designating the parking space as reserved for disabled persons or are otherwise clearly designated for the use of disabled persons.

“We are reminding motorists to comply with our parking for disabled laws and informing those who may not be aware that it is also illegal for all motorists, including the disabled, to park in the access aisle of an accessible parking space,” Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said.

Apele noted that the access aisle provides individuals with disabilities the necessary additional room to enter and leave their vehicles and to load and unload their wheelchairs, crutches and walkers.

Violators of the law are subject to a fine of up to $300.
