MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are warning residents about another lottery scam, this one in the form of a letter.

Hilo residents have informed police they have received a letter mailed from Madrid, Spain, informing them they had won a certain amount of money in a lottery.

The letter doesn’t ask the intended victim to send any money, but it does ask him to send a lot of personal information, including his bank account number and other personal financial information that could be used to withdraw funds from his bank account.

Police are reminding Big Island residents against disclosing personal financial information, such as social security number, checking account number or savings account number to strangers.
