MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section have identified the man involved in an attempted murder/suicide in Puna last month as Christopher Cline, 45, of Glenwood.

On May 25, 2006, Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a two-crash crash with a possible suicide on Highway 11 near the Lehuanani subdivision in Glenwood.

When officers arrived at the scene, paramedics were treating a 39-year-old woman who had been driving one of the cars. A man was lying on the road with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was unresponsive.

Witnesses reported that both drivers had been stopped on the Volcano-bound shoulder of the road and were having a domestic dispute from their cars when the woman tried to leave by driving in the Keaau direction. The man, later identified as Cline, reportedly rammed his car into hers, exited his vehicle then shot himself in the head. No one else was in either car.

Cline was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center.

The woman was taken to the hospital’s emergency room and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. She has since been released from the hospital.

A preliminary autopsy determined that Cline died of a fatal brain injury caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Final autopsy results are on hold pending toxicology results.

Detectives closed the case with no prosecution.
