Big Island police Wednesday (July 21, 1999) charged a Puna man with a variety of domestic abuse, firearms and drug offenses after they arrested him at his home in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

They also charged his friend, an Oahu man, with a variety of drug offenses.

The Puna suspect, James Anthony Lyman, 33, was charged with a total of 29 offenses and is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $249,500 bail.

His friend, Randal Michioku, 32, of Kaneohe, Oahu, was charged with 16 drug offenses after he was arrested with Lyman on Monday (July 19, 1999) at his Puna home. Michioku is being held in lieu of $54,500 bail.

Police had been looking for Lyman since January this year, when his estranged wife reported he had kidnapped and abused her.

Later, on July 11, Hilo officers responded to a 10:30 p.m. call of a man shooting a firearm on Makaala Street. Witnesses told investigators that Lyman was the one who fired the shots.

Police officers finally caught up with Lyman at the house in Hawaiian Paradise Park. While arresting him, the officers observed drugs in the house, obtained a search warrant and also arrested Lyman for drug offenses.

At the time, they also arrested Michioku for a variety of drug offenses.

During the arrest, the officers also recovered a 9 mm handgun.

Lyman was charged with abuse of a family or household member and kidnapping; a variety of firearms charges, including use of a firearm in commission of a felony; reckless endangering; and a variety of drug charges, including promotion of a dangerous drug.
