MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying individuals responsible for seven burglaries since August 20, 2006, at schools and businesses in and around Hilo.

All took place in the late night or early morning hours. The three most recent were early Friday morning (August 25, 2006).

At 2:12 a.m. Friday, burglars kicked in a door at a record shop on Kilauea Avenue and removed unknown contents.

Less than 45 minutes later they used a vehicle to break a door at a compact disc shop on Pohaku Street and took an unknown quantity of water pipes. A surveillance video recorded three individuals entering the store and evidence that a fourth waited in a Toyota sports-utility vehicle. Police traced the license plate to an SUV reported stolen from another business overnight.

At 3:32 a.m. burglars broke a glass door at a convenience store in Papaikou and removed beer and manapua.

Police believe all three of Friday’s burglaries, and possibly another four earlier in the week, were committed by the same group.

Police ask that anyone with information about the burglaries or the individuals responsible call Hilo Patrol at 961-2213 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in East Hawaii or 329-8181 in West Hawaii. Calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential.
