School openings mean one-way traffic in Hilo 08-01-02

Hilo police are reminding motorists that one-way traffic patterns on portions of Waianuenue Avenue and Kapiolani Street are now in effect because Big Island schools are reopening for the fall semester.

Traffic on Waianuenue below Komohana Street will be one-way makai from 7:15 to 8 a.m. on school days. During the same hours, traffic along Kapiolani Street between Haili Street and Waianuenue will be one-way in the Puna Direction.

Public schools around the island have already opened or are scheduled to open on different dates. Here are the scheduled openings for public schools:

The rest of the Big Island’s public schools will open on Thursday, August 22, 2002. The schools are Ernest B. deSilva, Hilo High, Honokaa Elementary, Honokaa High and Intermediate, Kalanianaole, Kapiolani, Ka’u High and Pahala Elementary, Kealakehe Elementary, Kealekehe Intermediate, Keonepoko, Kohala Elementary, Kohala High, Kohala Middle, Laupahoehoe, Naalehu, Paauilo, Pahoa Elementary, Pahoa High and Intermediate, Waiakea Intermediate, Waikoloa, Waimea Elementary and Waimea Middle.
