MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have recovered nine of 10 motorcycles stolen in November 1999 from the motorcycle shop in Kailua-Kona.

Lieutenant Henry W. Hickman, head of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section, said detectives have also identified the suspects in the theft case and are continuing their investigation for referral to the prosecutor’s office for grand jury action.

Only one of the stolen Honda dirt bikes is still missing, Hickman said.

About $60,000 in motorcycles and riding equipment were stolen between 6 p.m. November 3 and 7:30 a.m. November 4, 1999, from Kiser Honda on Alapa Street in Kailua-Kona’s Old Industrial Area. Burglars pried off a section of the building and crawled in to open the doors to the shop.

A 1982 Ford van stolen from Gray’s Furniture was believed to have been used in the theft. The van was found burning in Honokaa the morning the theft was reported.

Acting on a search warrant on November 29, 1999, the motorcycles were recovered in Hilo. The motorcycles and equipment recovered have been returned to the owners.
