Media Release

Big Island police are warning the public about a possible telephone scam.

A Hilo woman reported that on Thursday (November 4), she received a telephone call at home from a female caller who identified herself as a representative from AT&T. The woman informed the victim that a check she had sent to AT&T was not signed. The caller provided the check number and asked for payment with a credit or debit card.

The victim provided her debit card information to the caller and later learned that the check she sent to AT&T was cleared. She also learned that no authorized person from AT&T called her and $348.00 was deducted from her bank account.

Police advise the public never to give credit card or debit card information over the phone without verifying that the call is legitimate.
