MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified three males who died after a single-car collision Tuesday evening (October 7, 2003) on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 190) near the 22-mile marker at Puuanahulu in North Kona.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead the day of the collision. A third was flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died Thursday.

The passenger flown to Honolulu was identified as Robert McNair, 32, of Kailua-Kona. McNair was pronounced dead at 8:35 a.m. Thursday at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Zachary Reed, 21, of Kailua-Kona. The second passenger was identified as John Roth, 44, of a Kaloa, North Kona, address.

Police determined that the driver of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt when the collision occurred. It could not be immediately determined whether his two passengers were wearing seat belts.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are conducting an investigation into the cause of the deaths.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call TEU Officer Bradley Freitas at 326-4277 in Kona, TEU Sergeant Leroy Victorino at 961-2332 in Hilo or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

The deaths of the three men were the 26th, 27th and 28th traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 at the same time last year.
