Police have identified a traffic victim who was killed on April 29, 2003, in North Kohala as Alejandro Dorado Jimenez, 28.
Jimenez was identified on June 5, 2003, after family members arrived from Mexico to identify the victim.
During an investigation, Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives on May 1, 2003, charged a 32-year-old woman, identified as Kuulei Haunani Leith-Ellen Lewis, of Makapala, North Kohala, with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious bodily injury.
Lewis was arrested after she allegedly drove her 1995 Honda Passport into Jimenez, causing him to strike his head on the ground on Pratt Road in the Halawa area of North Kohala.
Fire rescue personnel were unable to resuscitate the victim and took him to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was determined he died of head injuries.
An investigation determined that Lewis got into the car while having a verbal argument with the victim, who was standing in front of the vehicle. Lewis placed the car into gear and drove forward, bumping into the victim and carrying him for a distance before she stopped abruptly, causing him to strike his head on the pavement.
