MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
The Kona Detectives on October 21, 2003 at 5:25 p.m. charged Shadrach Keoni Unea a 19 year-old male for Robbery in the Second Degree and Assault in the Second Degree after he struck a 52 year-old female and took her purse outside a business establishment in Kamuela. He was also arrested and charged on an unrelated incident on the strength of a Bench Warrant for Unauthorized Entry of a Motor that occurred on August 27, 2003.
Unea, of a Kamuela address was arrested after Police responded to a 1:36 p.m. call Monday October 20, 2003 and learned that Unea approached the 52 year-old female victim as she was walking towards her vehicle, after exiting a convenience store on Kawaihae Road in Kamuela. A struggle ensued after the suspect grabbed the victim’s purse, trying to remove it from her arms. The suspect then struck the victim with an open palm strike to the head, causing the victim to release the purse. The suspect then fled the area.
The victim was transported by Hawaii Fire Department Rescue personnel to the North Hawaii Medical Community Hospital where she was treated for her injures and released. She sustained a fracture and a small laceration to her nose.
Police conducted area checks and received cooperation from several residents in the area that assisted with information in locating and arresting Unea. Unea remains in Police custody at the Kona Cell Block in lieu of $5,000.00 bail.
