MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police officers and state deputy sheriffs served 66 warrants Wednesday (June 16, 1999) as part of their week-long sweep to reduce the number of outstanding warrants.

Wednesday’s joint state-county operation brings the number of warrants served during the past two days of the sweep to 170.

On Wednesday, 30 warrants were served in South Hilo, 14 in Puna and 22 in Kona.

Currently, there are a total of 4,849 outstanding warrants on the Big Island — 2,883 of them held by Field Operations and 1,966 held by the Records Section. The previously announced total of 2,737 warrants were those held by Field Operations only. The deputy sheriffs are helping Big Island police officers make a sweep of the South Hilo, Puna and Kona Districts to reduce the backlog.

So far, the sweep has resulted in 83 warrants being served in South Hilo, 36 in Puna and 51 in Kona.

The Police Department is urging residents who know there is an outstanding warrant on them to turn themselves in to the nearest police station. Doing so will avoid being served a warrant at their residence or place of work.

Residents who want to find out if they are wanted on an outstanding warrant should call 961-8805.
