MEDIA RELEASE

A 54-year-old North Carolina woman was injured Monday (September 24, 2001) when she was struck twice by a rolling empty tour bus.

The woman, identified as Sandy Tschopp, of Durham, North Carolina, was flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where she was reported in critical condition Tuesday morning.

At about 2:50 p.m. Monday, an empty Polynesian Adventures Tours bus parked in the Verna’s Drive Inn parking lot started rolling down a hill, struck and ran over the victim, who was talking with vendors in an area at the end of Route 137. The bus then ran up an embankment, came to a halt and started rolling backwards, running over the victim a second time.

The victim was flown to the Hilo Medical Center and later to Honolulu.

Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
