Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with a body recovered from the Wailuku River.

On Saturday (January 4), Fire Department personnel began searching for a 34-year-old Hilo man in response to a 5:47 p.m. call reporting that the missing man fell into the Wailuku River while fishing off Wailuku Drive near the Hilo Armory.

At 3:41 p.m. Monday (January 6), Fire Department personnel recovered the body of an unidentified man from the river.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The name is being withheld pending positive identification.
