During the week of January 18, 2010, through January 24, 2010, Big Island police arrested 40 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 120 DUI arrests compared with 71 during the same period last year, an increase of 69 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 59 major accidents so far this year compared with 112 during the same period last year, a decrease of 47.3 percent.
So far this year, there were five traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with one during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
