Media Release

During the week of February 5, 2008, through February 11, 2008, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 165 DUI arrests compared with 146 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 225 major accidents so far this year compared with 259 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent.

So far this year, there have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with six during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
