During the week of February 10, 2009, through February 16, 2009, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 154 DUI arrests compared with 177 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 210 major accidents so far this year compared with 250 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.

So far this year, there were five traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with six during the same period last year, an decrease of 17 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
