During the week of April 22, 2013, through April 28, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 437 DUI arrests compared with 464 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 427 major accidents so far this year compared with 494 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.6 percent.

So far this year, there were 12 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.1 percent.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (0), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
