During the week of May 6, 2008, through May 12, 2008, Big Island police arrested 36 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 510 DUI arrests compared with 455 during the same period last year, an increase of 12 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 670 major accidents so far this year compared with 782 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
