During the week of August 27, 2012, through September 4, 2012, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 947 DUI arrests compared with 974 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 981 major accidents so far this year compared with 931 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.4 percent.
So far this year, there were 25 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent.
To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (2), or a combination of both (6).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
